Black Shark Features
Manoeuvrability

The Black Shark, as featured in The Goldilocks Game, carries two coaxial, contra-rotating, three-blade main rotors that enable it to dispense with a tail rotor. This greatly increases its reliability and survivability. Because of this, this aircraft is unaffected by wind strength and direction, has an unlimited hovering turn rate, and gives a smaller profile and acoustic signature, while allowing a 10-15% greater power margin. The HOKUM is fully aerobatic. It can perform loops, roll, and “the funnel”, where the aircraft will maintain a concentrated point of fire while flying circles of varying altitude, elevation, and airspeed around the target.

Black Shark Features
Armour Plating

The airframe is made of a composite material with a structural central keel beam made of kevlar-nomex compound that protects the critical systems and ammunition. The pilot's cabin is fully armoured and can withstand 23-mm gunfire. The cockpit glass is reinforced to withstand 12.7-mm machine-gunfire. The Black Shark also has pilot ejection system that functions at any altitude, and enables a successful ejection by detonating the rotor blades a fraction of a second before the ejection seat is released.

The Kamov KA-50 (also called the Hokum A or Black Shark) is a powerful and sophisticated attack helicopter with heavy artillery and armour that features in a key scene in The Goldilocks Game.

The Black Shark is used by the air force of the Russian Federation in limited service but has not been 'fielded'. Fielding in air force terminology means "the decision to acquire and/or release a system to operators in the field" (Air Force Instruction (AFI) 63-101, page 65). In other words, the Black Shark has not been tested sufficiently for the military authorities to approve its use in combat situations, a process which often takes over 10 years to complete.

Nevertheless, the Black Shark carries an impressive array of weaponry and features (see features box below) that makes it a fearsome opponent on the battlefield. Find out who has one of these in The Goldilocks Game and how it performs in an action-packed dog-fight sequence by clicking here.
