Boris Medvedev is a powerful Russian businessman, popularly known in Russia as an 'oligarch'.

Russian oligarchs are business entrepreneurs who made their fortunes under President Gorbachev during the 1990's after the fall of the Soviet Union and became very powerful. The oligarchs are widely seen as well-connected entrepreneurs who started with virtually nothing and became rich using their connections to the corrupt, but democratically elected, Russian government during the state's transition to a market-based economy.
