Igor Rokovsky is Tania Likamolova's tennis coach in The Goldilocks Game.
Igor has known Tania since she was a little girl. Being a personal coach, especially to a child prodigy, is a tremendous responsibility and Igor takes his duties very seriously: he understands that his role is not just to give Tania instruction on how to improve her strokes, but to mentor her so she can be emotionally strong and socially well-adjusted, despite leading the lonely life that is the international tennis circuit.
Igor often appears impatient and annoyed with Tania's lack of improvement in her game. It is not that Tania makes little or no progress, but that Igor sets very high standards and is very driven to help Tania achieve her ambitions.
Being a keen observer of people in general and other tennis players in particular, Igor has developed a very tactical philosophy to his coaching: he knows that becoming a great player is ninety percent mental and that winning grand slams is done in the mind before it is done on the court. Igor tries to impart his words of wisdom to Tania, but he often feels that they fall on deaf ears: Tania, it seems, is too immature or distracted to appreciate what he is teaching her.
Despite his severe demeanour and approach, Tania knows deep down that Igor cares for her and has her best interests at heart… after all, he has always been like a father figure to her during the long months each year when she is competing and has to be away from her family.
But something happens that makes Tania start to doubt all of Igor's years of faithful service and whether he has an underlying motive.
