Shaped charges also feature in The Goldilocks Game.
Schlumberger defines a Shaped Charge as: "an explosive device that utilizes a cavity-effect explosive reaction to generate a high-pressure, high-velocity jet that creates a perforation tunnel. The extremely high pressure and velocity of the jet cause materials, such as steel, cement and rock formations, to flow plastically around the jet path, thereby creating the perforation tunnel." In short, shaped charges are simply directional explosives that can be used to creates holes in a different sorts of material. A shaped charge is designed to focus all of the explosive's energy along a single axis, making it very accurate and controllable.
Shaped charges used in the oil industry are typically constructed as in the diagram above. |

| PERFORATING GUN |
In The Goldilocks Game, a perforating gun features as a major part of the story.
According to Schlumberger, the leading oilfield services provider, a perforating gun is "a device used to perforate oil and gas wells in preparation for production". To perforate means to create holes to achieve efficient flow between the oil reservoir and the wellbore. The characteristics and placement of the holes (perforations) can have a significant influence on the productivity of the well. The perforating gun uses several explosive shaped charges to create the holes. The diameter of the gun used is typically determined by the presence of wellbore restrictions or limitations imposed by the surface equipment.
Perforating guns, when properly used, are an important invention and the oil industry cannot do without them. But when misused, they are highly dangerous, and their effects can be catastrophic.

| OTHER USES FOR SHAPED CHARGES |
Shaped charges are not only used in the oil industry. They are used in a number of different situations. For example, because of their piercing power, s haped charges are often used as warheads in anti-tank missiles, rifle grenades, mines, bomblets, torpedoes and various types of guided missiles. Shaped charges were first developed after World War I to penetrate tanks and other armoured vehicles. They are also used in the construction industry to demolish buildings in a controlled way.
Laser Detonator
Modern explosives are very stable to make them easy to carry. A very high temperature is needed to create the chain reaction that triggers the explosion. The high temperature is achieved by using a laser beam directed at the explosive material. The intense heat from the laser beam causes the explosive to become unstable.
